Second Place Feature Photo, 2016
The photo above includes the original caption when it was printed in the LeRoy Farmer City Press in June 2016, and the photo is optimized for newsprint. It was named the second place finisher for feature photography in the Illinois Press Association's 2016 Best of the Press feature photo contest with the following judge's comment: "Great, creative shot of an event that happens every year and is photographed hundreds of times. Finding a fresh and creative way to tell the same story is getting more difficult but the photographer did a good job here. Well done."
Honorable Mention Feature Photo, 2015
This photo, taken by Nowicki during LeRoy, Illinois' annual Memorial Day ceremonies, features a precise and tight focus that gives a fresh look at the commonplace. It was originally printed in the LeRoy Farmer City Press in Nov. 2015 and was named an honorable mention in the IPA's feature photo contest with the following comment: “We've all felt the power of ‘Taps’ and this photo captures that powerful feeling without sound.”
Third place general news photo, 2015
The photo features Tri-Valley High School's Civil War Daze event as well as Nowicki's quick shutter finger. It was originally printed in May 2015 and judged a third place finisher in the IPA's general news photo contest with the following judge's comment: “Great action captured. Crisp image.”
Third Place Sports Photograph, 2015
The above photo, taken in an IHSA Football playoff game, demonstrates Nowicki's sports photography skill. It was originally published in the LeRoy Farmer City Press on Nov. 20, 2015. The Illinois Press Association judged it as a third-place finisher.
Third Place photo series, 2016
Capturing emotion and atmosphere is a strength of Nowicki's photography. The Memorial Day photo series above and below are pictured as they were printed in the June 3, 2016 LeRoy Farmer City Press. The Illinois Press Association judges gave the entry a third place finish with the following comment: "Great series capturing an annual event that gets good coverage each year. The photographer did a good job capturing what makes this event unique. The content of the photos is relevant but it's the composition of several of the photos that makes the package great."
Honorable Mention Photo Series, 2014
Nowicki teamed with freelance photographer Jeff Zogg in 2014 to take an honorable mention in the photo series category, again for Memorial Day photos. Above and below, the photos are pictured as they were printed with optimization for the web. The above photo of the salute was taken by Jeff Zogg, and some of Zogg's photos from the original entry are not included on this website.
